Deep Impact: observations from a worldwide Earth-based campaign.

چکیده
On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign. These data show that (i) there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact; (ii) the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact; (iii) the new activity did not last more than a few days, and by 9 July the comet's behavior was indistinguishable from its pre-impact behavior; and (iv) there were interesting transient phenomena that may be correlated with cratering physics.

The Deep Impact Earth-based Campaign
Prior to the selection of the comet 9P/Tempel 1 as the Deep Impact mission target, the comet was not well observed. From 1999 through the present there has been an intensive world-wide observing campaign designed to obtainmission critical information about the target nucleus, including the nucleus size, albedo, rotation rate, rotation state, phase function, and the development of the dust and g...

We present results from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope observations of the impact of Deep Impact with Comet 9P/Tempel 1, on July 4, 2005 UT. These observations were carried out in conjunction with the worldwide observing campaign co-ordinated by K.J. Meech [Meech, K.J., and 208 colleagues, 2005. Science 310, 265–269]. The UKIRT team was the first to observe and announce the successful im...
متن کاملCoordinated Science Campaign Planning for Earth Observing Missions
Abstract— This paper addresses the problem of coordinated Earth science campaign planning, the process of transforming a specification of the objectives of an Earth science campaign into a set of observations for accomplishing the campaign, utilizing diverse sensing resources from a collection of remote sensors. The paper also introduces a software architecture for a system that performs coordi...

متن کاملThe impact of the worldwide Millennium Development Goals campaign on maternal and under-five child mortality reduction: ‘Where did the worldwide campaign work most effectively?’
BACKGROUND As the Millennium Development Goals campaign (MDGs) came to a close, clear evidence was needed on the contribution of the worldwide MDG campaign. OBJECTIVE We seek to determine the degree of difference in the reduction rate between the pre-MDG and MDG campaign periods and its statistical significance by region. DESIGN Unlike the prevailing studies that measured progress in 1990-2...
